Hey ya’ll. I was just being proactive and looking forward to the FUTURE where I plan to live one day. I was trying to get excited about it so I was thinking about the things I need to do for my med school app and trying to prioritize them. Then I got way ahead of myself and started thinking about residencies and where I think it would be cool to go if I didn’t get one of the FIVE per year at the U (in other words, a locale change will be very likely upon completion of medical school… you know… assuming I get in and everything… way to count your eggs before they hatch.. whatever). BACK ON POINT!

I thought it would be cool to complete residency at the Wake Forest Medical Center in SC (did you watch the ted talk on organ regeneration?) Then, I thought it would be cool, if I ended up NOT getting into med school at the U (ouch but let’s be realistic and NOT count eggs before they hatch), to go to grad school at Wake Forest because of their research intensive programs. Biomedical engineering is not only SO COOL, but really a societal and ultimately a human necessity at this point. Medicine has treated symptoms for so long (because there hasn’t been a way to do otherwise until recently for a lot of things) - bioengineering has the potential to correct problems at the source or bypass problems in the first place. Liver disease? No more symptom treating medicine - just grow a new liver from your own cells. This field truly holds the keys to the future of Medicinal technology and the human race.

I’m so excited. :)

PS - IF I got into med school on the first application attempt, Med school will take 4 more years (5 if I do a year of research), then 6 years of general surgical residency and plastic surgery residency (total, not each). Give or take a couple years for unknown variables… Avalon will be graduating high school when I complete my residency and am finally a plastic surgeon. Residency = 80+hour work weeks. The sad thing is, that even in lieu of these seems that might seem bad, I am so excited to feel like I am moving toward something that I want really bad. The neatest part is, Plan B is just as attractive as Plan A. I’m pretty stoked for my bright future. Please take note that this plan will result in a lower net amount of hours to devote to blogging. Meh… such is life I guess.
